SCC Statement on Aleppo
December 19, 2016
In light of the recent atrocities in the city of Aleppo, the Syrian Canadian Council (SCC) expresses its utmost condemnation of the attacks on civilians and IDPs attempting to evacuate the city. The SCC denounces and is horrified by reports of recent attacks by Iranian-backed militias targeting civilians and disrupting the evacuation of thousands from the city of Aleppo.
The SCC recognizes the important role that Canada plays in attempting to end the humanitarian catastrophe in Aleppo, including the passing of the recent Canada led resolution in the UN General Assembly calling for an end to hostilities in Syria and Aleppo in particular.
However, the Assad regime backed by the Russian military and Iranian sponsored militias continue to target and terrorize civilians trapped in eastern Aleppo. The humanitarian tragedy has reached catastrophic proportions and immediate action is needed to alleviate the suffering of civilians and to provide them with a safe passage to evacuate the city.
The SCC calls on the Government of Canada to work with the international community to secure the evacuation of civilians from eastern Aleppo and to pressure the Governments of Russia and Iran to cease their campaign of violence and terror in Syria.
